A LOCAL LENS on Where to stay, gather, and play for any style trip

Louisville, Kentucky has momentum right now, and if you know where to look, you'll find a city that's equal parts bourbon heritage and creative rebellion. This isn't a guide to the obvious. It's where to go when you want taste, craft, and a trip worth remembering. Sydney Catinna-Montgomery is a local creator and tastemaker dedicated to amplifying the best of Louisville’s creative, culinary, and cultural scene.

We picked her brain to find the top spots for a weekend getaway—whether for Derby weekend, a couples retreat, or a friends-only trip.

WHERE TO STAY

Hotel Genevieve: A boutique stay in NuLu with a jazz bar speakeasy and French restaurant that feels like you've been let in on a secret. The kind of place where the vibe is as intentional as the menu.

Tempo Louisville: Just off the main drag in NuLu (our arts district with the best local restaurants and shops), Tempo provides proximity without the chaos. Walk across the street to Rabbit Hole Distillery, just named North America's best bourbon tour or head to their rooftop bar for a curated bourbon flight.

Myriad: Set in a former disco ball factory in the Highlands, Myriad leans into Louisville's quirky side. Think pool, bunk rooms for groups, and a Spanish restaurant that's worth the trip alone. It's playful without trying too hard.

WHERE TO GATHER

Mill Iron 4 or MeeshMeesh: James Beard semifinalist Chef Noam Bilitzer runs both a Levantine Mediterranean restaurant and the recently opened ranch-to-table butchery, Mill Iron 4. Reservations book weeks out.

La Bodeguita de Mima: National Geographic-featured Cuban spot where the food and atmosphere are equally stunning. Order the Ropa Vieja to try a delicious Cuban classic served with a tableside history lesson.

Barn8: Farm-to-table dining in a horse barn on a working thoroughbred farm with ingredients grown on-site. Their menu changes seasonally so be sure to ask what the chef recommends.

WHERE TO PLAY

Louisville Food Tours: The best way to understand Louisville is through its food. Let someone else map the route while you taste your way through the city's most compelling kitchens and stories.

Prova Spirits Tour: A nano-distillery and cocktail bar making Italian liqueurs designed to pair with bourbon. Take a tour, take a class, or just settle in at the bar and let them walk you through what happens when Old World craft meets bourbon country.

21C Museum Hotel: Louisville's contemporary art museum doubles as a boutique hotel. Even if you're not staying, walk through to catch rotating exhibitions that prove this city takes its creativity seriously.

Distilleries to Visit: Get the bourbon country experience without leaving Louisville. You’ll find Angel’s Envy on Main Street–the first to pioneer finished bourbon. (If you think you don’t like this dark spirit, just give their rye a try!) Rabbit Hole is my top pick for an up-and-coming, impeccably branded experience in a state-of-the-art facility.
