How the country music star is leveling the playing field one instrument, one field, and one community at a time

Long before stadium tours and chart-topping records, Morgan Wallen was a kid in East Tennessee with two constant companions: a baseball glove and a love for music. Those twin influences of competition and creativity shaped not only the artist he would become, but the man behind the music. Today, they also form the backbone of the Morgan Wallen Foundation (MWF), a nonprofit dedicated to giving young people access to the same opportunities that changed his life.

Founded in 2021, the foundation supports youth programs in sports and music, while also stepping in to help communities in crisis—providing food, supplies, and relief when they’re needed most. At its core, MWF is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: all children deserve a chance to thrive, play, and create.

“The Morgan Wallen Foundation was created to help ensure that young people could have access to the same opportunities Morgan had growing up, particularly in sports and music,” says Kathleen Flaherty, the foundation’s Executive Director. “Those experiences shaped who he is, and he wanted to make sure other kids, regardless of circumstance, could have that same shot.”

Flaherty spent several years working closely with Wallen on his management team, a relationship that naturally evolved into her current role guiding the mission and direction of his philanthropic efforts. With an entertainment background that includes managing artists and celebrity-led foundations such as RED, led by Bono; THORN, founded by Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore; and Sharon Stone’s Planet Hope, she brings deep experience to building business-minded, mission-driven organizations that pair scale with sincerity.

The idea for MWF, however, was born in a much more personal moment.

According to Flaherty, the idea for the foundation initially took shape over a lunch at Noshville Deli in Nashville. “It was like a lightbulb went off for Morgan, in terms of what we would focus on. He has a real soft spot for kids and wanted to help create opportunities that might otherwise feel out of reach.”

Built on Sports and Song

Wallen’s connection to sports, particularly baseball, runs deep. He played for years at Gibbs High School near Knoxville, where he was a standout athlete. The lessons of discipline, teamwork, and commitment that he learned on the field became foundational to his later success.

“Through baseball, Morgan learned about hard work, drive, and showing up for your team,” Flaherty explains. “Those lessons carried straight into his music career and into how he runs his business. He’s extremely driven and works harder than most.”

Music, meanwhile, offered a different kind of grounding. From singing in church with his sisters to learning the violin, music became both an outlet and a calling.

“Music has been in Morgan’s life since he was three years old. At five, he asked for a violin for Christmas and by seven he was playing the piano too. He loved all of it,” says Wallen’s mother Lesli, also the Program Director for the  foundation. “Then, he got into baseball and that passion took center stage. We did our best to give our kids access to the things they loved—even when times were tough. Watching Morgan give back to other young people in the areas of sports and music is an absolute joy and makes me prouder than anything.”

Those early experiences are exactly why sports and music remain the foundation’s primary focus today.

Leveling the Playing Field

One of MWF’s central goals is leveling the playing field for kids across America, particularly in underserved communities. And according to Flaherty, the needs they encounter are often surprisingly modest.

“Sometimes it’s as simple as a team needing 30 baseball gloves and 10 bats,” she says. “Or a school band needing five flutes so kids don’t have to share. We help at all levels big and small—but all equally important.”

In addition to youth programming, the foundation is deeply committed to community relief. From swift natural disaster response to distributing meals and groceries to food-insecure families, MWF steps in where help is needed most. A prime example of their community work in action is the $1.2 million donation the foundation made to Hurricane Helene relief efforts.

“We want to move quickly, where needs are most pressing,” adds Flaherty. “So, we’ve built an agile organization that can adapt and deploy funds without too much red tape.” That flexibility is made possible in large part by Wallen himself. The foundation is primarily funded by the artist, with three dollars from every concert ticket sold going directly to support its work.

“The Morgan Wallen Foundation’s funding and hands-on support has been invaluable to our restoration of the Parkwood Community Club ballfields. Morgan’s commitment was clear from the get-go and his visits to the ballpark to connect with the kids, play ball and learn the Parkwood story were so meaningful and genuine.”  -Sherry Stinson, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville’s Parkwood project lead

Giving Back, One Stop at a Time

In 2023, the foundation launched “One Field at a Time”, partnering with Major League Baseball organizations—including the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Atlanta Braves—to rebuild and refurbish baseball fields in tour states. Since then, the foundation has helped restore approximately ten fields, creating safe, high-quality spaces for kids to play.

Among the foundation’s most impactful initiatives is the “Tour Give Back” designed to leave a tangible legacy in every state Wallen performs. From his 2024 and 2025 tours alone, the initiative delivered over $1 million to schools in need.

“The support and dedication we have received from the Morgan Wallen Foundation has been a game changer,” says Nate Stachey, President Gibbs Youth Sports. “Thanks to them, Gibbs Ruritan Park has really come to life and we couldn’t be more grateful. These folks are the real deal, humble and kind, and Morgan’s generosity is a blessing.”

Perhaps the most personal project to date is still ahead: a substantial grant to rebuild an all-purpose field at Gibbs High School, Wallen’s alma mater. Once complete, it will be renamed Morgan Wallen Field.

“Being part of bringing the Parkwood fields back to life right here in Nashville, and making sure these kids have a place to play for years to come, means a lot to me. I spent a lot of hours on a baseball field growing up, and it taught me lessons I still carry with me. Sports can shape a kid’s life in ways that last far beyond the game.” -Morgan Wallen

Playing the Long Game

As the Morgan Wallen Foundation continues to grow, its mission remains refreshingly clear. It’s about access. It’s about showing up. And it’s about investing in kids, whether that means a bat, a violin, or a helping hand in a moment of crisis. For Wallen, the work is deeply personal. For Flaherty, it’s about translating his heart into action.

“When you give kids the tools to play and create,” she says, “you’re not just supporting a hobby. You’re helping shape who they become, and Morgan knows that better than anyone.”

And that, much like a good song or a well-played game, can echo for a lifetime.

This is what Nashville needs to focus on, not thinking less of him for his missteps along the way, which he has owned up to and taken responsibility for. I wouldn't be the person I am today without him. Thank you, Morgan, from the bottom of my heart! I will ALWAYS be a fan and will support you in everything you do, whether it be musically or personally
