The Enduring Allure of the Rusty Parrot Lodge & Spa in Jackson, Wyoming

Tucked into a quiet corner just beyond the bustle of Jackson’s Town Square, the Rusty Parrot Lodge & Spa stands as a monument not just to hospitality, but to heritage. Rebuilt from the ashes of a devastating 2019 fire, this family-run, 40-room boutique hotel has once again taken its place as one of the West’s most beloved mountain retreats. But while its stone-and-timber silhouette has been modernized, the soul of the lodge—rooted in three decades of tradition, community, and love for Jackson Hole—remains unchanged.

“The Rusty Parrot is more than just a hotel,” says Brandon Harrison, General Manager and son of the original founder. “It’s our family’s legacy, and our guests become part of that story.”

In 1990, Ron Harrison opened the original Rusty Parrot Lodge with a dream: to offer a warm, authentic, and elevated experience in one of the most iconic towns in the American West. His son Brandon, who once served as a bellboy and lived in the hotel growing up, has since taken the reins, shepherding the property into its next chapter after the fire destroyed the original building.

“It was heartbreaking,” Brandon recalls. “But it gave us a chance to reimagine the Parrot—not to change its spirit, but to refine it.”

What emerged from the rebuild is a lodge that reflects both past and present: elk antler chandeliers, Western art from the Harrison family’s private collection, handcrafted furnishings, and cozy fireplaces set against sleek architectural lines and sophisticated detailing.

A True All-American Experience

Jackson, Wyoming, and the Rusty Parrot together represent the heart of what many imagine when they think of the “All-American” vacation: vast landscapes, frontier spirit, and a welcoming small-town charm. It's the kind of place where you might spend your morning fly fishing along the Snake River, take in a local rodeo by afternoon, and end your day around a crackling fire with a cowboy poem on your pillow.

“It’s nostalgia and adventure rolled into one,” Brandon says. “You’re surrounded by the wilderness that shaped our country’s identity—places like Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are right in our backyard. And we aim to be your cozy, elegant home base as you explore it all.”

From the second you step into the Rusty Parrot’s grand lobby, the West is everywhere. From curated art that celebrates cowboy culture to the smell of fresh baked cookies greeting guests each day, the hotel makes no secret of its regional roots. Guests are invited to connect with the land and its people in genuine, immersive ways—bike rides into the Town Square, wildlife viewing from the rooftop deck, or a personalized hike planned by staff who know every local trail.

“There’s this deep sense of place here,” says Brandon. “Whether you’re soaking in a spa bath with wild-foraged herbs or enjoying a Wyoming beef tartare at the Wild Sage restaurant, every detail is inspired by this valley.”

While Grand Teton and Yellowstone are the marquee attractions, Brandon urges visitors to consider the lesser-known spots that locals adore.

“Get up and out early—by 6:00 a.m. in the summer, the valley is already glowing,” he says. “Places like Schwabacher’s Landing, Oxbow Bend, and the String Lake trails are stunning and quiet in those early hours. You’ll find the solitude most people miss.”

And for those looking to escape the crowds entirely? “Just hike farther than a mile,” Brandon laughs. “Most people won’t go that deep, but the rewards are huge.”

Bespoke Comforts and Signature Touches

At the Rusty Parrot, luxury isn’t loud—it’s lived in. Each of the 40 rooms has been individually designed with care and intent. Some have balconies for stargazing. Others are positioned for maximum sunlight or offer views of the Snow King Mountain, Saddle Butte and Flat Creek

All feature hand-selected fixtures, many designed to patina beautifully with time.

Then there are the little surprises. Like the beloved Rusty Parrot Teddy Bear, playfully arranged by housekeepers in different poses each day. Or the thoughtful turndown service, complete with handcrafted chocolates and a printed cowboy poem.

“These things may sound small, but they’re what our guests remember,” says Brandon. “It’s the intimacy that sets us apart.”

Perhaps no amenity exemplifies the Rusty Parrot’s ethos more than the Body Sage Spa, a serene retreat hidden within the lodge that offers deeply restorative and holistic treatments.

“It’s not just about pampering,” Brandon explains. “It’s about connecting people back to themselves and to nature.”

From the Next Level Après treatment—ideal after a day of hiking or skiing—to a CBD-infused herbal sugar scrub or the cutting-edge Glo2Facial, every service is designed with healing and personalization in mind. Many spa products are sourced from local, sustainable lines such as Alpyn Beauty and ESSE Skincare.

Food also plays a central role in the lodge’s identity. At the Wild Sage Restaurant, Chef Hugo Goodwin crafts a seasonal menu that highlights regional flavors with sophistication and heart. Think Wyoming beef with chili oil, local game meats, fresh vegetables from nearby farms, and standout desserts like Smoked Crème Brûlée paired with a sip of whiskey. The restaurant’s thoughtful breakfast offerings—from Snake River Rancheros to lemon ricotta pancakes—set the tone for a day of mountain adventure.

“We want people to feel and taste this place. To experience being grounded in it.”

The People Behind the Welcome

Behind every luxury touch at the Rusty Parrot is a team of passionate individuals who make the magic happen.

What makes this place special, Brandon insists, is not just its design or its setting—but the relationships it fosters. “When you call to book a room, you’re speaking with someone on our property. That same person may greet you when you check in, recommend their favorite trail, or serve you a drink on the deck later that night.”

It’s this consistency and care that keeps people coming back—not just to the lodge, but to the community it represents.

“We’ve had guests who have been coming for decades,” Brandon says. “Some even stopped by during our five-year rebuild just to check in and show their support. They’re part of our story now.”

Despite the fire, despite the rebuild, the Rusty Parrot Lodge is still the same place it has always been—a warm, unpretentious refuge where the traditions of the West live on in hand-carved furniture, local recipes, and the quiet rhythm of small-town hospitality.

And as for the name—the quirky, evocative "Rusty Parrot"?

“Well,” Brandon grins, “that’s one secret we only tell our overnight guests.”

Whether it’s your first time to Jackson or your fifteenth, the Rusty Parrot Lodge & Spa is the kind of place that captures the best of the West, and it invites you to become part of its next chapter.
