explore four iconic resorts that belong on every golfer’s bucket list

Every fan of the game of golf can attest to the spectacular feeling of watching history be made from the sidelines, but being able to walk in the shoes of the greats themselves is a truly unmatched experience. Over the years of being a player and “fan” of the game myself, I’ve come to realize that there are simply some golf destinations that stand above the rest: they hold the ghosts of champions past in the very fabric of their layout, etched within the winding fairways and whispered in the morning breeze. They capture stories. They carry heart. And they invite you into something bigger than the game itself.
Time and again, I find myself drawn to classic American golf resorts where tradition, architecture, atmosphere, and legendary design are woven together to create a treasure trove of experiences. These are places where history lingers, testing amateurs and pros for generations, and where future generations, both golfers and non-golfers alike, can create memories that last far longer than a weekend away.
Let’s check out four of my personal favorite golf destinations that stand out as must-ads to your bucket list, each iconic in its own way, and each offering a sacred sneak peak into what it feels like to stand on the shoulders of giants.
If there’s one resort that feels like stepping into a living piece of American history, it’s The Greenbrier. Tucked into the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia, this legendary property has welcomed presidents, dignitaries, and icons for more than two centuries. The moment you arrive, you understand why it’s earned the nickname America’s Resort.

The hotel itself is unmistakable. It’s wrapped in Dorothy Draper’s bold, joyful design that somehow feels both glamorous and comforting. Add in the presidential history, the sweeping lawns, and the once-top-secret Cold War bunker hidden beneath the property, The Greenbrier is layered with spectacular stories. And yes, there’s a reason it’s dominating headlines right now. With Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce rumored to be choosing the iconic destination as their upcoming wedding destination, the resort has found itself back in the spotlight, reminding the world what insiders have always known: this is a place where prestige and old-world elegance meet.
On the golf side, each course has its own personality. The Old White TPC carries pedigreed credibility, while the Greenbrier Course and Meadows Course provide variety, beauty, and challenge. They’re walkable and strategic, exactly what championship-worthy golf should be.
Yet, golf is only one chapter of The Greenbrier story. The spa is legendary, and the casino adds that timeless layer of sparkle. Off-road adventures, falconry, biking, and fly fishing ensure that no two days feel the same. It’s the kind of place where families can split up for the day and reunite over cocktails in the evening.
What stays with me most is the atmosphere, which is formal yet welcoming, grand yet deeply personal. There’s a sense that you’re part of something enduring the moment you step foot on the expertly manicured grounds. For golfers who love tradition and a touch of opulence, I think visiting The Greenbrier is non-negotiable. It’s a destination that feels celebratory simply by existing there, and one that proves historic never means outdated.
Whenever I think of Pinehurst, I think of so much more than a golf destination. In the simplest of summaries, it’s a pilgrimage. Having watched my husband-to-be compete at Pinehurst No. 2 (side note: Pinehurst No. 2 is the most legendary of the 10 championship 18-hole golf courses) during the 2024 U.S. Open, I experienced the famous golf track on a much deeper level than the years I’d spent watching PGA golf on television. There’s something sacred about those sandy fairways and turtleback greens that words simply struggle to capture.

The village itself feels timeless with its brick paths, rocking chairs, and a silent early-morning mist that give Pinehurst a quiet reverence. You can feel Donald Ross’s genius everywhere, especially his belief in strategy over strength, and precision over power. Walking No. 2 is a humbling experience in itself. Every shot demands thought. Every green asks a question. Watching the world’s best wrestle with its subtleties only deepened my respect for the course and its history.
The Carolina Hotel embodies classic Southern hospitality, with wide verandas and a sense of calm that invites you to slow down. Off the course, Pinehurst delivers in every direction, from the Cradle short course and expansive practice facilities to the spa, brewery, and dining options that make it ideal for families of all ages. Pinehurst offers the rare balance of luxury and comfortable relaxation. It’s historic without being stuffy and guaranteed to feel magical any time of year.
Sea Island has a special softness to it – call it that familiar “coastal elegance” that instantly puts you at ease. Long favored by presidents, families, and professional golf tournaments alike, it carries a quiet confidence rooted in tradition.
The Seaside Course, with its ocean breezes and exposed terrain, is as beautiful as it is challenging, so bring your A-game and maybe plan for a drink or two at the turn! The Plantation Course offers a more forgiving, strategic complement. Together, both expertly manicured golf courses showcase how coastal golf can be both playable and memorable for all ages.

Whether you’re staying at The Cloister or The Lodge, you’ll relish the upscale amenities and world-class dining experiences. The beach club is a particular favorite of mine to relax and unwind, and the practice facilities are among the best in the country (just ask some of the PGA pros who proudly call Sea Island their home base).
This retreat of a city is nestled not too far back from I-95, which makes it easy to access from other parts of Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida, and feels like the seaside getaway every family craves both summer and winter. As someone who’s experienced the best that coastal golf on all four corners of the U.S. has to offer, I think Sea Island is simply one you can’t miss.
Set in the heart of the rolling hills and cliffs of Napa Valley, Silverado blends historic estate architecture with modern California luxury. It’s a resort that feels relaxed yet refined, and where your morning might begin on the golf course and drift into afternoon wine tastings.

The North and South Courses, redesigned by Johnny Miller in 2011, bring PGA Tour-level fairways to wine country, and are perhaps some of the only courses in the region to do so with such balance. The terrain, mature trees, and walkable routing make for engaging rounds of golf, while the surroundings keep everything feeling unhurried and relaxed.
In the resort itself, classic architecture that spreads out and feels slightly reminiscent of midcentury modernist Palm Springs, CA, offers multiple pools, a spa, and proximity to world-class wineries, making Silverado ideal for couples or families who like to experience it all. Award-winning dining options are never far and are sometimes paired with the overall wine experience in a way that feels authentic, never forced.
If you fancy a historical escape nestled near the gold coast (and is a short drive away from exciting cities like Sacramento and San Francisco), crave beautiful sunsets, and desire unforgettable wine all in one place, Silverado is your vacay dream come true.

I would be remiss not to give a special shoutout to a destination that embodies luxurious low country living in every sense of the words. Tucked away near historic Beaufort, South Carolina, Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort feels like a hidden chapter in the story of American history, one that rewards those willing to venture just a little off the beaten path. It’s relaxed, authentic, and deeply connected to its nature-rich surroundings, offering a reminder that sometimes the most unforgettable golf experiences aren’t about prestige alone, but also about peace and presence.
Consider These Essential Resorts for Your Next Golf Pilgrimage
Each of the destinations outlined above tells a story through its design, but most importantly, through the spirits that tarry on. From mountain grandeur to coastal calm, from Longleaf Pine-lined fairways to wine-country ease, the history within golf’s greatest tracks offers perspectives that give you a better sense of the world around you, and there’s no better way to experience it than by putting the best of the best on your calendar.
If you’re planning your next getaway, or simply dreaming up a bucket list worth chasing, I think each of these resorts deserve a place of prominence. They remind us why we all fell in love with the game in the first place, and why there are some hidden gems out there worth revisiting time and again.
