Fifty iconic gloves tell the story of America’s pastime and legends

For a sport obsessed with home runs, towering fly balls, and walk-off heroics, it’s easy to forget that some of baseball’s greatest stories begin with a glove.
That’s exactly what makes The Finest in the Field: A History of Baseball Through 50 Iconic Gloves such a compelling read. Written by sports historian Ed Wheatley with a foreword by Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench, the beautifully produced volume from Rizzoli Books turns baseball history inside out—telling the story of America’s pastime through the well-worn leather that helped shape its most unforgettable moments.

Released in time for the 2026 baseball season, the oversized hardcover showcases 50 iconic gloves from the unparalleled Rawlings archives. Each glove serves as a time capsule, connecting readers to legendary players, pivotal moments, and the evolution of the game itself.
That evolution has always been driven by the athletes who used them.
“From the first glove to feature a web and pocket created with Bill Doak in the early 20s, to the futuristic REV1X glove designed in recent years with Francisco Lindor, Rawlings glove design has always been shaped by the input of some of the best to ever play the game,” said Mike Thompson, Rawlings’ Chief Marketing Officer.
The result is a collection that is equal parts baseball history, design study, and celebration of craftsmanship. Readers will encounter gloves connected to pioneers and legends alike, including Jackie Robinson, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Derek Jeter, and Ken Griffey Jr. The stories range from Mays’ immortal “The Catch” in the 1954 World Series to Jeter’s iconic “Flip Play” and Griffey’s seemingly effortless ability to scale outfield walls in pursuit of greatness.

Yet what makes The Finest in the Field particularly memorable is that it goes beyond statistics and highlight reels. The book explores the deeply personal relationship between players and the tools they trusted throughout their careers.
“The relationship between a player and his glove is so special and unique—there is an emotional bond,” Thompson explains. “We wanted to share some of those amazing stories that have never been told, and in doing so, also tell the story of America’s pastime.”
Anyone who has ever spent hours breaking in a glove will understand exactly what he means.
This isn’t just a book for historians or collectors. It’s for anyone who remembers wrapping a new glove in rubber bands, sleeping with it beside the bed, or carrying it through an entire summer in hopes of becoming the next neighborhood legend. The photography is exceptional, the memorabilia is fascinating, and the stories remind readers that baseball’s greatest moments often begin long before the ball leaves the bat.
As Major League Baseball gathers in Philadelphia for the 2026 All-Star Game, The Finest in the Field feels like the perfect companion. It’s a celebration of innovation, craftsmanship, and the players whose gloves became extensions of their greatness. Baseball may be remembered through its highlights, but as this remarkable book reminds us, its soul is often found in the leather.
