How presence and wonder can help us savor life when time feels scarce

The mid-March Atlantic waters lapped onto the shore of Savannah’s favorite getaway, Tybee Island. Not yet warm enough for a swim, but just the right temperature to wade in, the cool, compact sand beneath my feet grounded my body. I lifted my gaze towards the beaming sun, savoring the scent of salt in the air and the gentle sea breeze on my face. Time seemed to stand still as I felt comfortingly small in a big world of beauty, peace, and possibility.

When spring blossoms and summer peaks, time mysteriously begins to fly by. We dart into full schedules with long, sunlit days to make the most of the welcoming weather. We make lasting memories, then find ourselves wondering where the time went and wishing we had more. When this season comes, I find myself inevitably asking: Is there a way to slow down time?

Let me introduce you to Awe, whom I recently reconnected with while on that Savannah beach. Awe is especially helpful at slowing down time, because it lures us into the present moment and holds us there in a deep trance of reverence and wonder. While this feeling can’t be forced, we can create the conditions to invite awe-inspiring, time-slowing experiences into our next adventure. Try these tricks, and find more time by losing yourself in the moment.

Break routine.

Invite a fresh perspective by taking the scenic route.

Seek crowds.

Tap into a sense of oneness with others at a concert or sporting event.

Venture outside.

Let nature woo you on a walk in the woods or along the beach.

Gaze upwards.

Release your pride to the setting sun and shining stars.

Observe excellence.

Be inspired by athletes, artisans, and phenomenal performances.
